Geothermal Energy

The aim of the present work is to demonstrate and compare the environmental effects of long-distance heating and hot water supplying systems, based upon the already existing geothermal energy in Hungary and comparing it with the nonrenewable energy carrier (natural gas). We rely on the evaluations of the SimaPro 7.1 Life Cycle Assessment program.

The project Geothermal Communities started on 1 January 2010 with the management of Geonardo Ltd. in partnership with the Department of  Mineralogy, Geochemistry and Petrology and the city of Morahalom. The project will demonstrate best available technologies in the use of geothermal energy combined with innovative energy-efficiency measures and integration of other renewable energy sources in three different pilot sites (Hungary, Slovakia and Italy)

Dél-Alföld

The geothermal wealth of the South Great Plain Region is significant at European level; its exploitation however is far below the possible level. The geothermal gradient in Hungary is on average 5oC/100m, which is one and a half times. The reason for this is that the Pannonian basin’s crust is thinner than the average – 24-26 km, thus the asthenosphere is closer to the surface.

The European Union does not have a uniform policy regarding the utilization of thermal water binding on the member states. In its guideline, the European Economic and Social Committee emphasizes that the need for a secure, inexpensive, environmentally sound and sustainable supply of usable energy is at the heart of the Lisbon, Gothenburg and Barcelona European Council decisions.

Various types of organic matters, such as humic substances a range of hydrocarbon derivatives,  are present in Hungarian water sources (both artesian and thermal ones), in particular in those of the Dél-Alföld (Southern Hungary) region.

Hódmezővásárhely

Ma már közismert, hogy geológiai adottságaink kiválóak: a Pannon medence kontinentális alapkőzete vékonyabb, hővezetése jobb a világátlagnál, így a magmából áramló hő hatékonyabban melegíti a Felső-Pannon laza homokkőiben, illetve a repedezett mészkő rezervoárokban meghúzódó fluidumokat, hévízet készítve belőlük. A geotermikus gradiens átlagos értéke kb. 20 méterenként 1oC lefelé haladva, tehát 2.000 m körüli mélységben akár 100oC –os hőmérséklet áll rendelkezésünkre.
